chapter 19 – teagan

A huge yawn escapes me as I sit in class. It has been a couple days since the “almost” at Ryan’s. Luca had been literally inches away from kissing me. I wanted it to happen so badly that when it didn’t, I was disappointed. I was so sullen that for the rest of that night and the next morning I was depressed. I was moody and snapped at my mother and at Meghan when she picked me up for school. I hadn’t heard from Luca yet and that didn’t help my disposition.

Finally, after 2nd hour, I receive a text from him.

do u miss me?

what do u think? I reply

I think you need to eat. Lunch? He asks.

 I answer

Meghan joins us for lunch. She seems to be over the snub she received from Luca on his first day.

“Hey,” she says to Luca and me.

“Hey,” I answer back. Luca just nods his head towards Meghan.

“I see that you two are eating the famous Stillwater High School grilled cheese sandwich, which is looking particularly crusty,” she says gesturing towards our lunch trays.

“Nothing like a good piece of cardboard stuffed with imitation cheese,” I say, picking up half of the sandwich and waving it in the air, making light of the school district’s attempts at serving a healthy lunch.

“Enough ketchup solves the problem,’ Luca says to Meghan with a smile. “Do you want a bite?” he asks, his chin dimple showing.

“I’ll stick with my cold lunch, thanks,” she says. “I heard Nick hired you at the shop,” she adds.

“He did,” Luca says.

“Congrats?” Meghan says.

Luca smiles.

I am watching Luca while he spars with Meghan. He can definitely handle her. Not many people can.

He leans back in the lunchroom chair, the chair balancing precariously on two legs. His long legs stretched out keeps him from toppling over backward.

I continue to eat my lunch and then glimpse at Luca every once in a while. When I do look over at him, I find him watching me in a similar way. I smile at him and he smiles at me.

“Okay, you two,” Meghan says standing up, “I can’t sit here and watching you two make googalie eyes at each other.” She moves over to a table a couple rows over, where Ryan is sitting.

“Googalie eyes?” Luca asks me.

“I wouldn’t call what we are doing googalie eyes,” I say, stuffing a huge hunk of grilled cheese in my mouth.

“Really?” Luca says. “What would you call it?”

I finish chewing and take a drink of diet Coke. “Flirting?” I suggest.

His chair comes back to the four legs and he leans closer to me, his body turning to the side, his elbows on his knees, closing off any prying eyes that are behind him.

“You really don’t have any idea how crazy gorgeous you are. I can’t stop staring,” he said, his voice lowering at the end.

There are those butterflies again and the hot neck. I restrain myself from moving my hand to my neck. Anxiety creeps up on me, I was never very good at taking compliments.
